September 23, 2009 IMPORTANT: Sidecar for Pigs Peace closing early this Sunday! On Sunday, September 27th, Sidecar will close at 4:30pm so that we can celebrate our staff of volunteers. They give freely of their time and skills to keeping Sidecar running and working for the animals, and I'm hosting a gathering in their honor! IMPORTANT: Recalls First and foremost, those cruel jokers at Kellogg [more on their cruelty, below] have de-veganized a favorite product, Worthington Chick-etts. What's worse, although they added 2 common allergens (milk and eggs), they did not notify any of their suppliers, sellers, or even sales representatives, so Sidecar sold several "logs" before the ingredient change was noted. This is a Sidecar-specific recall, not a Kellogg recall: if you have Chick-etts at home that you have not eaten, check the ingredients, and look for the "Contains Milk, Eggs..." warning after the ingredient list. If you have the offensive version, please return it for store credit. They will be donated to the dog residents at Pigs Peace Sanctuary. Another recent recall is for a specific lot # of Artisana Raw Tahini. The lot # is 90811, and the sticker is found on the bottom of the jar. I don't know if Sidecar ever sold that particular lot #, but it doesn't matter: if you have Artisana Raw Tahini Lot # 90811 at home, even if it has been opened bring it to Sidecar for a store credit. We will get reimbursed for it.
News from the World of Food If you were on this email newsletter last year, you may have read that Kellogg owns Gardenburger, as well as Worthington and Morningstar Farms. Well, it seems that they're phasing out many popular Gardenburger products, and only some are being relabeled as Morningstar Farms - the BBQ Riblets were the first, and now you can expect the Gardenburger Chik'n Grill patties to disappear soon only to reappear in December-ish as Morningstar Farms' Grillers Chik'n veggie patties, and it seems this product will stay vegan. As mentioned above, however, Kellogg is making some pretty sketchy decisions and they're not being very forthcoming with the information. They not only de-veganized Chick-etts, they also added eggs to Morningstar Farms' Meal Starters Crumbles, and let's not forget that Morningstar was the brand that committed to significantly reduce eggs in its products by 2010. Frankly, I find Kellogg's formula changes pretty offensive, when they're moving towards more cruelty and more allergens, and when they're being so sneaky. If you're feeling frustrated, too, join the many vegans who are telling Kellogg what they think of their moves: http://www.morningstarfarms.com/contact_us.aspx Expect a form-letter response, but rest assured they're listening. Letter-writing campaigns were successful when Health is Wealth added eggs to their Chicken-Free Patties and Nuggets, and when Fantastic Foods discontinued their Tofu Scramble mix. If you're unsure what to say, I recommend a short and simple letter expressing your extreme disappointment in their decision to add eggs (always derived through cruel methods) to the Meal Starters Grillers Recipe Crumbles, which is hardly in the spirit of their commitment to reduce their use of eggs. That's the news from here. Be sure to tell me what frozen foods you'd like me to stock, and don't forget to shop early on Sunday! Love, Doh |
